Crunchies

This is barely a recipe but crunchies are indispensable in our family. My Grandma makes crunchies, my mum makes crunchies and now I make crunchies. My kids gobble them up so quickly.

If you have a few slices of bread left over at the end of the day then transform them into crunchies. I like to buy a bag of bread and make a huge batch as they last for a good week. I guess they would last longer but they get eaten around here too quickly!

sliced bread
butter
vegemite
grated cheese

Preheat oven to 150 degrees C. Butter the slices of bread and spread a little vegemite over the top. Use a serrated bread knife to cut each slice into ‘sticks’ (Essie calls them ‘sticks’ and I think it is fitting).

On a lined baking tray place all the bread sticks side by side, nice and close. Then grate some cheese evenly over the top. Don’t go overboard on the cheese, just a nice scattering.

Bake for about 20 – 25 minutes or until dry, crisp and well crunchie. Cool on the tray and store in an airtight container.

My Grandma always stores them in an empty, clean Moccona coffee jar.
